We at commercetools are a partial inventor and pioneer of the most advanced form of SaaS that is now the gold standard. We are in the cloud as a first class citizen, not on the cloud. It’s a crucial difference that has positive wide-ranging impacts for our customers and the larger tech ecosystem.

All enterprise software requires customizations and extensions. Commerce platforms, especially, require extensive customizations and extensions. Examples include:
  • Real-time inventory checks during checkout
  • Integrations with loyalty systems
  • Pushing product updates to search engine
In “legacy” SaaS, that code all lives within the walls of that SaaS application. A better form of SaaS, which we at commercetools helped to invent, is to take opinionated approach when it comes to customizations and extensions. Rather than writing your custom code inside a commercetools-specific framework, you instead write your code as Google Cloud Functions.
