Mitchelle De Leon, Director of Impact and Strategic Partnerships at SkyTruth, shares how the conservation technology nonprofit is transforming the way they monitor environmental impacts using Google Maps Platform, machine learning, and cloud computing. He also shares a deep dive into SkyTruth’s Cerulean – a platform that uses artificial intelligence to analyze thousands of radar satellite images every day, scanning the world’s oceans for the tell-tale signs of oil slicks. 

As SkyTruth ramps up the automation process, Cerulean will detect oil slicks from vessels, offshore oil platforms, and other sources, creating a global map of oil pollution and identifying polluters around the world. SkyTruth has a 20-year history of innovation in the use of remote sensing and advanced data analysis techniques, applying their expertise to reveal environmentally damaging actions and make the impacts visible, measurable, and actionable by making fact-based analysis freely available to advocates, scientists, journalists, governments, and the broader public.

Rainforest Trust purchases and protects the most threatened tropical forest and has protected more than 39 million acres by establishing protected areas in partnership with local organizations and engaged communities across more than 68 countries.
